Health Sciences Classroom Services (HSCS) classrooms are shared spaces that support teaching, learning, and collaboration across the University community. All users are expected to follow University policies and the guidelines below to help maintain safe, welcoming, and reliable learning environments.
Community Care
HSCS classrooms are shared learning environments used by many members of the University community each day. Small actions by each user help ensure these spaces remain welcoming and functional for everyone.
You can help support the community by:
- Leaving classrooms clean and ready for the next group
- Resetting furniture if it was moved during your activity
- Being mindful of noise levels in hallways and nearby public spaces
- Reporting technology or facility issues when they occur
Working together helps ensure classrooms remain reliable spaces for teaching, learning, and collaboration across the health sciences community.
Before You Leave the Room
Before leaving an HSCS classroom, please take a moment to:
- Return furniture to its original configuration
- Remove personal belongings and materials
- Dispose of trash or recycling appropriately
- Turn off classroom technology at the consoles
- Return any portable microphones to their charging stations
- Report any non-urgent technology or facility issues to [email protected]
These quick steps help ensure the classroom is ready for the next class or event.
Other Policies and Guidelines
Classroom Policies
The following policies guide the use of HSCS-managed classrooms:
- HSCS Facility Policy – The primary policy statement governing HSCS spaces
- HSCS Use Policy – Defines acceptable and prohibited behaviors in and around classrooms
- HSCS Facility Use Policy – Provides detailed expectations and procedures for reserving and using classrooms
These policies complement other University policies found in the University of Minnesota Policy Library.
Student Responsibilities
Students using HSCS spaces must follow the Student Conduct Code and Student Group Policies at all times, whether or not the University is in session.
Students engaging in prohibited behaviors outlined in Section IV of the Student Conduct Code (such as property damage or disruption of the academic environment) may be referred to University officials and, when appropriate, law enforcement.
Protected Health Information (PHI)
All members of the University community must comply with the University PHI Policy.
Protected Health Information must not be recorded, broadcast, or shared in HSCS classrooms. If HSCS staff become aware of unauthorized sharing of PHI, they are required to report the incident to the Health Information Privacy and Compliance Office (HIPCO).
Furniture and Room Setup
To maintain safety and consistency across classrooms:
- Do not move furniture or equipment between rooms or remove items from classrooms. This restriction helps prevent damage, maintains code compliance, and ensures the University meets insurance and safety requirements.
- If furniture is rearranged during a reservation, reset the room before the reservation ends
Returning rooms to their original configuration ensures the space is ready for the next scheduled class or event.
Public Space Use
Public areas within HSCS buildings remain open community spaces and are not reservable for courses or events.
Activities in public spaces should:
- Not interfere with scheduled classroom activities
- Follow University policies
- Comply with occupancy and fire safety requirements
Information tables located in HSEC, Moos, and PWB are managed by Student Unions and Activities and scheduled through the St. Paul Student Center.
